I Tried the MARCA Unic Synthetic Clarinet Reed So You Do Not Have To
A few months ago, I was up late doing what I always do when I cannot sleep. Scrolling around for clarinet gear I had never tried. That is how I found a reed I had never even heard of, made by a French reed company called MARCA. The line is called Unic, and once I read what it was supposed to do, I knew I had to get my hands on one.
What Even Is This Reed
MARCA Unic reeds are a hybrid. They start as real cane, then the company injects synthetic fibers directly into the cane's structure. It is not a fully synthetic reed like the ones you have probably already tried and set aside. It is cane that has been reinforced from the inside. On paper, that is exactly the idea I have been chasing for years: a reed I can reach for when my favorite Vandoren V12 is not in the box, that still gives me a real cane sound.
There are a few cuts in the Unic line. I ordered the Elite cut by accident the first time around, and it turned out to be the one that impressed me most. I also tried the Classic cut, but it did not have nearly enough resistance for how I play, so I cannot speak to it with much confidence beyond that.
My First Impression
The first time I put the Elite cut on my clarinet, I genuinely lost my mind a little. It holds the sound the way a cane reed does. It even feels like cane on my lip, which surprised me more than anything else. My first reaction was that we might finally be where synthetic reed players have wanted to be for years.
The catch: it was just a touch too resistant straight out of the box. These reeds can be adjusted, and I will get there eventually, but I will admit adjusting a reed at this price point makes me a little nervous the first time.
How It Stacks Up Against My Vandoren V12
To get a real sense of where this reed lives, I compared it side by side with my usual setup, a Vandoren V12. I tried a few different strengths of the Unic Elite, including a 3.5, and matched it as closely as I could to my regular V12 feel.
Here is my honest take: the 3.5 sounds good. Really good. It just does not sound quite as good, to my ear, as the resistance I get from a strength 4. So my instinct is to live with that extra resistance a little longer and get used to it, rather than back off to a strength I already know is not quite it.
If you already play V12s and want a rough starting point, I would say go about a quarter strength down from your usual V12 and treat that as your sweet spot to start adjusting from.
The Overtones Test
Tone is one thing you can describe in writing. Overtones are not. The overtones are the secret notes vibrating underneath the main pitch, and they are a huge part of what makes a clarinet sound like a clarinet instead of a kazoo. In the video, I played a full whole tone scale on the Unic 4, the Unic 3.5, and the Vandoren V12, and lined up the overtones for all three side by side so you can actually see and hear the difference.

My Honest Verdict
Here is where I landed. The MARCA Unic Elite cut is a genuinely impressive reed, and the closest thing I have played to a real cane experience in synthetic form. If your goal is the same as mine, a reliable option for the nights you cannot find your favorite V12, this is worth seeking out.
Two honest downsides. First, they are expensive. I can live with that if the reed performs. Second, and this is the real problem, they are hard to find. I ended up ordering mine from France, and I would like reeds I reach for regularly to be a little more available than that.
Should You Try It?
If you can track down the MARCA Unic Elite cut, I would absolutely give it a try, especially if you already lean toward a Vandoren V12 setup. Start around a quarter strength down from your usual V12 and adjust from there.
